Career guidance

Are you worried about your placement? Don't be worried about it you will get placed in a reputed company. You might be confused why I'm saying it so lightly isn't it?

If you are pursuing any technical qualification like B.Tech, M.Tech, BCA etc you might have wondered why only IITians get better package than a guy who is from a non-IIT college/university. If you had thought like this then I would say it's the not the thing that matters. Of course IITians are better than us. However at the same time it doesn't matter where you come from or what's your background is. Once Google CEO Mr. Sundar Pichai said, "Getting into a great institution doesn't guarantee success. It matters a lot but doesn't guarantee success. People do well from all walks of their life".

Do you think what he said is right? Well, I would say yes, he is right. If you want to achieve something in life then you have to do something different from others. I also got placed in TCS which is a reputed Indian IT company and I'm not from any IIT.

While being a student, we always try to focus more on our academics but it's not sufficient. We need to stay relevant and up to date with the industry requirements or in any field in which we are interested.

We should be proactive in exploring different technologies.

Here are some tips to prepare well for placements:

Either it's a on campus placement or off campus placement. We are always judged on the basis of our skills not on the basis of our degree.

Tip 1:

Well, we all study basic programming concepts and C language in our first year. Yet it's not sufficient to get a job. We have to learn multiple programming languages as per the industry trends and requirements.

Don't just learn the syntax of a particular language. However solve some competative coding challenges as well. There are various competative coding platforms which will provide you various types of coding challenges with different difficulty level. This will help you to sharpen your logic and concepts.

Some competative coding platforms are:

  • HackerRank
  • Code Chef
  • Top Coders and many more

After learning any language, try to make a small project. It will help you to understand the concepts more deeper.

Tip 2:

Make yourself available online:

Am I talking about social media sites on which we spend a lot time? Well, the answer is NO.

Here I'm talking about LinkedIn, GitHub and YouTube.

So let's first discuss about LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a social media site for professionals. Here we can connect with HRs or associates of any company. It's a good platform to have professional contacts. We all must be active on such platforms and utilise these opportunities.

Secondly, GitHub is a platform to learn and share our coding knowledge. It's also known as social media site for developers. Here we can keep our projects in repositories. This will help us to showcase our coding skills by making our projects available online.

Last but not the least YouTube. We all use YouTube for listening music or watching videos. However, it can also be a good platform to share our knowledge.  We can create own channel where we can upload our own tutorials so that many people will get benefit from our knowledge. It will also create a habit of teaching.

Tip 3:

Most of us don't start preparing for aptitude and we start at the end moment. If would say it not a something that you could learn in a day. It needs practice. So give atleast an hour for aptitude preparation.

Tip 4:

I'm sure most of us forget something which plays a very crucial role in our success. Think about it. Not getting what I means? Well, I'm talking about soft skills. Now most of you might be thinking why soft skills are needed in technical jobs. I would say both technical and soft skills are required to get not only technical jobs. However, it matters in every field. One can acquire a lot of technical degrees or certificates. But if one is not able to showcase his talent then there is no meaning of those degrees or certificates. So both are required. Soft skills are something that can take us to higher positions in our life.

If I have missed something or in case I'm wrong at any point then you may tell me in comment section. Thanks alot for reading. All the best for your future!!!
